Wendy offers reading and spelling tutoring for learners of all ages using The Barton Reading and Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham based method. It is specially designed for those who struggle with spelling, reading, and writing, often due to dyslexia or a learning disability.
The Barton System is an Orton-Gillingham based intervention curriculum for learners of all ages who struggle to sound out words, read slowly or inaccurately, or struggle to spell, especially when writing sentences or stories. Sometimes these learners have been diagnosed with dyslexia or another learning disability. Other times, traditional methods have just not been successful. Clinical diagnosis or identification is not necessary.
Orton-Gillingham is not a program. Instead, it is a scientific approach that features a direct, systematic, multi-sensory way to teach reading, spelling, and writing to struggling learners. It is most effective when used in a one-to-one setting with one instructor focused on the unique strengths and needs of one learner.
Struggling readers can read up to a point. But they usually hit a brick wall by third to fourth grade (if not sooner). They use very different strategies when they read and these strategies will start to fail them by third to fourth grade.
"The longer you wait to get help for a child with reading difficulties, the harder it will be for that child to catch up."
"Dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by a different wiring of the brain. Individuals with this condition must learn coping strategies. Research indicates that dyslexia has no relationship to intelligence. Some say the way individuals with dyslexia think can actually be an asset in achieving success."
"This year, for the first time since ...the 1970s, 9-year-olds lost ground in math, and scores in reading fell by the largest margin in more than 30 years."
